Exposure scenarios

Exposure scenarios

Exposure scenarios are a relatively new element of hazard communication. If you receive unexpected large safety data sheets of more than 100 pages, most likely you have received an extended safety data sheet with several exposure scenarios attached.

Exposure scenarios are part of the REACH registration, more precisely a past of the chemical safety report, which must be prepared for substances registered in volumes of more than 10 t per year.

Exposure scenarios will be generated for each use separately, that means there will be separated exposure scenarios for the production of the substance, for the use of the substance in mixtures and for all the end uses of the substance. Generally, the exposure scenarios shall describe the whole life cycle of the substance.

Each exposure scenario describes the use with standardized use descriptors, detailed operational conditions and risk management measures.

The downstream user is challenged to compare his use and his conditions of use with the conditions described in the exposure scenarios of the raw material. Generally speaking a use is only covered by a REACH registration, if the registered conditions of use are met. If this is not the case, the downstream user may prepare an own chemical safety report, that describes his use and proves that exposure is within the tolerable limits.

Exposure scenarios need to be communicated along the supply chain. If you receive an extended safety data sheet you need to make sure that you communicate the relevant information also to your customers.

Of course we can support you with a review of your raw material exposure scenarios as well as with preparation of own exposure scenarios.
